DIN1.2080/D3, also known as AISI D3 or High Carbon High Chromium (HCHCR) steel, is a cold-worked tool steel under the DIN EN ISO 4957 standard. Renowned for its exceptional wear resistance, high hardness (up to 60–62 HRC after heat treatment), and excellent dimensional stability, D3 is a high-carbon, high-chromium steel ideal for applications requiring sharp cutting edges and resistance to abrasive wear. Its high chromium content provides moderate corrosion resistance, but it has lower toughness compared to other D-series steels like D2 due to its higher carbon content. Typically supplied in the annealed condition (max 255 HB), it is suitable for precision tooling and long-life cutting applications.

Applications

DIN 1.2080 / D3 (HCHCR) is primarily used in cold work applications where high wear resistance and hardness are critical:

Cold Work:

• Blanking and forming dies for sheet metal processing.
• Punches, trimming dies, and shear blades for cutting hard materials.
• Cold extrusion dies, deep-drawing dies, and thread rolling dies.
• Knives for paper, wood, and metal cutting.

Plastic Moulds:

• High-wear mould inserts for abrasive plastics.
• Precision moulds require excellent polishability.

Other Uses:

• Gauges, measuring tools, and wear-resistant machine components.
• Coining dies, slitting cutters, and burnishing tools.
• Rolls for cold rolling mills and forming rolls.

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of DIN1.2080/D3 ensures its high hardness and wear resistance:

• Chromium (Cr): Enhances wear resistance, hardness, and moderate corrosion resistance.
• Carbon (C): Provides exceptional hardness and strength, contributing to wear resistance.
• Silicon (Si) and Manganese (Mn): Improve hardenability and strength, though present in lower amounts.
